  The Open Source Year Ahead 

  I have been rarely playing the prediction game in the past, but now that Red Hat finally seems to fulfill my old predictions – also in the cloud – it is time to join Bob Sutor and others to play again.

  

  Open Source and the Cloud.

  Open source is now the maturity phase, and it is interesting to look at how compares open source and cloud computing (courtesy of Google Insight for search).

  But the open source world is not so small, looking at the same graph for different European countries makes a difference. While France looks at the cloud as much as North-Americans do, other countries (like Italy) are lagging behind (see also EC2 statistics).

    LibreOffice it will have to play out. It might already have all the backing it needs.

    Lot of developers who could not work in work hours on openoffice due to its submission policy now can. Signing rights over are forbin by a lot of companies.

  Focus Group Open Source in Public Administrations 

  The legacy of OpenOffice.org and office migrations will be at the center of the next Open Source Focus Group meeting, to be held in Rome in January 2011.

  In the meantime you might want to have a look at previous events – ranging from open source licensing to tenders and marketplaces – and presentations, all available on the new Focus Group Open Source blog hosted on WordPress.com.

  Olliance Group is organizing the 6th Annual Spring Edition of the Open Source Think Tank, that will be held April 7–9, 2011 in Sonoma, CA at the Sonoma Mission Inn.

  SOS Open Source Reports: SpagoBI 

  SOS Open Source analyzed SpagoBI, the Italian open source business intelligence suite developed by Engineering, one of biggest and oldest Italian IT companies.

  SpagoBI is hosted at the OW2 Consortium forge, house of interesting and innovative open source projects like Funambol (see the corresponding report) and Bonitasoft.

  SpagoBI code base is stable and well-commented, but it received little popular attention. The absence of books as well as the lack of case studies by third parties are among the possible causes for that.

  EU-funded Open Source Initiatives: NESSI’s Missing Deliverables 

  NESSI, is the “European Technology Platforms” – i.e. industry-led consortia considered by the EU relevant discussion partners to discuss how to achieve Europe’s future growth, competitiveness and sustainability objectives – and its declared strategic objective was to support the evolution from software to services. Not suprisingly open source was supposed to play a major role, but things went differently.

  Despite the EU backed NESSI with  about 1 million euros, the Open Source Working Group did very little. As I noticed before NESSI WP description mentions deliverables that never got delivered.

  Update: I have been asked from one of the contacts I mentioned to remove all companies’ and organizations’ names. You can find the list in the NESSI Open Source Working Group Manifesto mentioned above.

  Until now no news about those deliverables, though.

    I think that there should be an effort to build a common open repository of all the documents, software and any other output of EU funded projects. This will ensure transparency and long term access to EU research results.

    Well,
    the first step is always to set up a forgery where to commit open source software sources. This will give immediatly the status of art.
    It seems to me that open source is just a word in EU concepts.

    @Andrea Great idea! It happens to look for some EU-funded research findings and not finding them.

    @Stefane you’re probably right, but in this case I’m more concerned about missing contents, though. Especially considering how researchers and the Commission look at NESSI.

    @Antonio I’m not sure you need to run a private forgery, it is a waste of public money, especially now that the European OSOR is up and running.

  Open Source Marketplace for Public Administrations: Presentations are online 

  All presentations of the event held on the 17th of November to talk about electronic purchase of open source services,  are available at the host’s website (Consip, in the news section).

  The event, organized in collaboration with the Open Source Focus Group for Public Administrations, focused on how to use the award-winning Italian Public Administration Electronic Marketplace to ease open source procurement processes.

  Who Backs Linux, Some Numbers in Perspective 

  The Linux Foundation report about who writes Linux is always a worth reading, especially if you take a moment to look back at 2009 report and see how things are changed.

  It is interesting to compare relative increments to learn more about how changed the attitude of the usual suspects to Linux  and how newcomers are doing. (More …)
