AI Changes the Way We Assess Open Source Sustainability
More than a decade ago, I started SOS Open Source with the goal of helping organizations assess the long-term sustainability of Open Source projects before adopting them. That work eventually evolved into a methodology, a decision support tool, and later into the EU-funded OSSEval project.
Today, I believe the problem has fundamentally changed.
The challenge is no longer collecting metrics or building ever more sophisticated assessment methodologies. Modern AI can already analyze much of the publicly available evidence—release history, governance, community activity, licensing changes, maintainer concentration—in a matter of minutes.
The real challenge has become asking the right questions, while remaining aware of AI’s limitations. An AI assistant can only reason about information that is publicly available, making human judgment and validation as important as ever.
