  Italian Startups: Global Entrepeneurship Week, 17 November, Rome 

  The next week, from 17th to the 23rd of November, people around the world will join the Global Entrepreneurship Week, a movement of entrepreneurial people aimed at generating new business ideas and opportunities.

  Top countries of the initiative the United Kingdom, with 3345 different activities, followed by USA with 845 activities and Malaysia with 417. Italy has 1o initiatives, 5o members and 20 partners. 

  It is an event by invitation, a registration form is available on line.

  Open Standards: Does OMAT bring luck to Interoperability? 

  Today the OMAT conference hosted the “Standards and Interoperability“ session, and for the second time this year Adobe, Microsoft and the Italian OpenOffice.org community were discussing about interoperability and conformance.

  The first OMAT conference was held just when Microsoft was enjoying OpenXML approval, while today they publicly announced the decision to join the OIC TC, the OASIS ODF Interoperability and Conformance technical committee.

  The Italian OpenOffice.org community already welcomed Microsoft’s decision to support ODF. Now that they decided to join the OIC TC accepting Rob Weir invitation, we are looking forward to see IBM and Microsoft cooperate for a real interoperability.

  Open Source VoIP Conference: BBF Europe 2008, 2-4 December, Rome 

  Broadband Business Forum 2008, the meeting point for IP communications leaders, will be held in Rome on the 2-4 of December, in parallel with the first Italian edition of Expocomm, a fair trade dedicated to Information Technology, to telecommunications, digital media and internet.

  The main topics of the BBF agenda are broadband future, unified communications, next VoIP generation, as well as innovation.

  On the second day I will be the chairman of the “Open Source Software for the development of IP telephony” session, and we will cover open source trends in the EMEA region, hybrid case histories, costs savings and increased flexibility, advantages, disadvantages and best practices.

  Registrations are open.

  Interoperability Conference: Adobe, Microsoft and the Italian OpenOffice.org community meet up again at OMAT 

  OMAT conference, a landmark in Italy in electronic document, content and corporate process management will be held in Rome this year, on the 12-13 of November.

  On the second day will be held the “Standards and Interoperability“.

  For the second time Adobe, Microsoft and members of the OpenOffice.org community will be sitting at the same round table to constructively talk about how to better satisfy users’ needs, bringing some ideas and hopefully future actions.

  The conference is a follow up of the previous edition, held just when OpenXML was approved by ISO. I will talk about the importance of being called an open standard, putting it in perspective also with the evolution of standards.

    Maybe the OO community could ask Microsoft to list the patent numbers covering the ECMA376 specification? They were never forced to do it during the ISO scandal, so it would be good to have the list.

  ForumPA: “Open Public Administration” Prize still open to Entrants 

  “PA Aperta 2008”, an Italian prize awarding the best practices among public administrations delivering services with an eye to disadvantage people.

  For applying you need to fill the form before the 14th of November.

  The Free Hardware Foundation –  in collaboration with PopoloBue.tv, PandoraTv, NetLeft and the Telematics Freedom Foundation, invite everyone to join the new series of “Technology Tuesday”,  4th November at 9 PM by the Love&Dissent gallery, via Leonina 85, Rome (Underground line B, Cavour station).If you have a genuine interest in technology, politics and media consider  to participate.   OpenOffice.org: The Italian Linux Day foster the creation of “MS Office Angels”! 

  In occasion of the Linux Day 2008, that will take place on Saturday in 119 Italian cities, the Italian Linux Society and the Italian OpenOffice.org Association are launching a campaign for a special endangered specie. The campaign is aimed at helping the Microsoft Office users specie, a specie at risk by OpenOffice.org diffusion.

  ILS and PLIO members are engaged to save a Microsoft Office’s user helping her to progressively migrate to OpenOffice.org 3.0. In a early stage users would be allowed to use both suites, with a wider and wider use of OOo 3.0, to end by using just OOo.

  “Microsoft itself admitted Microsoft Office’s users were destined for extinction, comparing them to dinosaurs”, says Michele From della Silvestra, ILS’s president. “That ads actually didn’t bring all of them to stop using Microsoft Office, so we decided along with PLIO to launch an initiative to foster the creation of “MS Office Angels”. MSOffice Angels are groups of volunteers aimed at helping Microsoft Office users to stop using it, and move to OpenOffice.org”.
