  The Case for Open Source Development, a Personal Case Study 

  A couple of days ago I happened to meet my old friend Idel Fuschini on the street, and we have been talking about things happened ten years ago or longer when working in the mobile VAS sector, when WAP was still to come.

  Idel over the last ten years has been working on implementing mobile-based services using proprietary products like Volantis (nowadays pretty open source), Mobileaware, and Oracle Portal to go. More recently he started to use also open source platforms like WURFL, eventually ending to be fascinated by the open source side of software development.

  What follows is not a research, neither an investigation including a quantitative evidence, but just a reportage of a programmer’s life and how open source can make a change.

    Hi Roberto,
    some news about my small project, one year after. Mobile community people started to follow me since I released some new features.
    Simon Judge writing on his blog, helped me to raise interest in my work.

    Updates in numbers:
    300 dowloads per month
    8 external contributions from people, both bugs’ corrections and requests for new features
    Apache included my project, now listed among existing modules for Apache
    4 companies wrote me to tell they have adopted my package for delivery mobile content.

    At the end of the day I realized that to make a good open source piece of code, you must have a good idea and people like Roberto and Simon that help you. Thank you both for your help!

  Creative Commons Italia: Coping with European Copyright Collecting Societes 

  Creative Commons Italia and SIAE – an Italian private organization that acts as the Italian collecting society for authors and publishers – on the 23th of December created a legal working group comprising members of both organizations.

  Deborah De Angelis (Creative Commons Italia, lawyer) will take part to all meetings along with another CC member and SIAE’s representatives. Meetings will be held every second week, the took place yesterday in Rome.

  Italian authors adhering to SIAE to protect their works and interested in use CC licenses are recommended to follow the future progress via Creative Commons Italia blog (Creative Commons Italia is a Nexa‘s project).

  Java Italian events: JavaDay, third edition, Rome 24-01-2009 

  Javaday, is the Italian technical event for Java developers, now at its third edition. The Rome JavaDay, that will take place on the 24th of January at the Roma TRE University, is the result of a joint-effort of the Java User Group Roma, the Java Italian Portal and the Java Italian Association.

  OpenOffice.org: About Turning OpenOffice.org Migrations into a Business 

  The OpenOffice.org Italian Association announced that OpenOffice.org in Italy broke the five million mark this year, yet another record for the Italian release of the world’s leading free and open source productivity suite.

  Davide Dozza, PLIO’s president commented the result:

  Back in 2006, when we started counting OOo downloads, 800,000 downloads per year was an astonishing result to us. At that stage we couldn’t even imagine that the number would have grown to 1.780.000 in 2007, and beyond five millions in 2008.

  Even if the number of downloads is not an accurate measure of the market share, it definitely shows the trend.

  So said, there is still a lot to do, especially in the business arena. OpenOffice.org has recently started a Business Development Project, managed by Alexandro Colorado, who recently posed questions about how to set standards for OpenOffice.org professionals.

    I agree that there is a future business in migration. We surely need better integration to OpenOffice.org from other systems, but I don’t see SUN as the major problem here. SUN (as in conjuction with IBM and others) are working hard to develop tools (e.g. ODF-Toolkit etc). I more see the various vendors of properitary business software as the big problem. We need integration from ERP, CRM and other critical business software.

    I would rather point my fingers of those Microsoft Business Partners, that provide customers with no choise (as to select Microsoft Office).

    First step will be the customers to ask their business software providers if they can deliver a solution without vendor lock-in.

    Hi Leif,

    I am glad you joined the conversation. Actually you are right, EAI is a two faces coin. As a matter of fact vendors are conservative, and they tend to be in the early majority.

    The Colosseum wasn’t built in one day, nad even Microsoft spent time and energy to build its Office System partnerships network.

    What I have learned volunteering for years is that communities can help a lot, and IT vendors are paying more and more attention to what people say, especially if they are bloggers under the radar.

    We can make a difference, but Sun has to play its role, and they have good reasons to do it, before others like IBM will likely do..

  Italian Blogosphere: Piùblog 2008 meet-up 

  Piu’blog 2008 , arrived this year at its third edition, aims at spreading the Italian blogosphere out of the blogosphere. Piùblog – hold within the the annual fair of the independent Italian publishers “Più libri più liberi” from the 5th of December until today – offered more than 30 different sessions, ranging from Second Life to social media and networks.

  BarCamp: Piùblog 2008, Rome, 5-8 December 

  Piublog 2008 will take place in Rome 5-8 December within the event “Più libri più liberi” (eng.: more books, more freedom), the annual fair of the independent Italian publishers.

  Piublog 2007 was a great venue to meet in person Italian bloggers and influencers, 2008 edition has three different sessions and seems really promising.

  Italo Vignoli kindly invited me to talk in his session – Social Life. Friendfeed, Facebook and Myspace, between fun and usefulness -  about my experiences and impressions about corporate blogging, as observer of the International ICT scene. I am looking forward to meet old and new friends to share our vision of the future.

  Open Source Unconference: RomeCamp and Hybrid Open Source 

  Web geeks, students and curious people gather for a two days at the RomeCamp, an recent incarnation of the ‘classical’ BarCamp offering attendees also an interesting conference session.

  On Friday morning Luca De Biase chaired a thoughtful opening session welcoming the lot of us with keynotes from Alberto Castelvecchi introducing “publishing 2.0“, Salvo Mizzi speaking of the  Ten-Year Forecast Program of the Institute for the Future and Carlo Alberto Pratesi stressing the importance of entrepreneurial ecosystems.

  Listening to Carlo Alberto Pratesi talking about how ecosystems I wish I had time to share with the audience the ideat that also industry advisors, corporate networks, and buyer networks are fundamental (e.g. Marketcetera).

  RomeCamp’s organizers might consider to leave more space for opening conversations within conferences’ sessions next year, still keeping this “hybrid” format of unconferences + conferences.

  My first talk held at a barcamp – Free as in Business: lucrative coopetition – was focused on the relationships between companies and communities. This time I entitled my pitch Open Source Business in a Hybrid World, mainly speaking of 4 different sources of the open source value proposition.

  Openmoko FreeRunner: Optimized for Android Open Source – Koolu is optimizing Google Android platform on FreeRunner, a beta version will be soon available.

  Symbian Foundation Gets More Members – The foundation announced that Japan’s third-largest wireless carrier, SoftBank, Renesas Technology, and five other companies are on board now.

  Funambol Developer Workshop 2008 – Funambol Conference 2008 will be held in Milan next week on the 25th of November. Registrations are open.
