Few days ago Subversion has been submitted to the Apache Incubator, a move praised by many as the natural fit for both projects, both for technical reasons (Apache projects use Subversion, Subversion relies on many Apache projects) and a shared vision about IP (same license) and community governance (same voting process).
Bill Portelli, Collabnet CEO, and Justin Erenkrantz,  Apache Software Foundation President, answered few questions aimed at better  understanding if and at which extent this is a win-win move. Let’s start from the corporate side.
I don’t think svn’s failure to attract developers has anything to do with what umbrella it’s under, Tigris or Apache. It’s more the fact that the world has moved on to distributed SCM.
Reading the answers, it seems like they expect enterprise customers to bring the innovation to the codebase. While I have trouble imagining what innovation could compete with distributed without actually BEING distributed, that – if genuine – will be more interesting to watch than any change of umbrella organisation.

I might agree about the general tendency towards distributed Software Configuration Systems, especially among open source communities.
So said, today ASF and many other organizations are happy with Subversion, and they might join the development team.
Time will tell, one year from now I’ll check it out.
The relationship between open source communities and vendors keeps being a topic of debate these days. Simon Phipps at the South Tyrol Free Software Conference gave a talk about his “software freedom scorecard“, a method to indicate the approach vendors take to promote software freedom as part of their business strategies.
Matt Asay says we have to get used to companies separating their open-source efforts from their revenue models. We may be talking of  “fauxpen source” vendors in this case – as originally named by Taurus Balog –  but it doesn’t necessarily cut open development out of the equation.

Last week Packt has announced that Drupal has won both the best open source PHP CMS Category and the Hall of Fame new category. Having been one of the judges for the first category, I wish to share some thoughts about my number 1, 2 and 3.
As a long-time Joomla! user turned WP-convert, my feeling is that this is simply a recognition of what WP users have already known. I’m glad I finally made the switch. Congratulations.
As a project manager who loves WordPress, I often get asked why is it the right CMS to use. At the end of the day it comes down to preference. Preference of the client and developer.
However, at a meetup in San Diego recently on the discussion of what CMS to use, the leader of the discussion said the Open Source CMS matrix was a good place to get a comparison. The reality is that it is not a good source of information. The version of WP they are using for the comparison is 2.2.1 when the most recent is 2.9.1. Anyone who has worked with WP knows the improvements made between these versions are astounding and the main reason why WP just won the Best Open Source CMS in 2009.

you are definitely right saying that is a matter of preference, and public directories maybe outdated and have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Beyond personal preferences a number of metrics can help customers go open source, though. Recently I have been analyzing 4 open source selection methodologies, studying findings from 8 different research projects and assessing over 60 tools useful to measure software quality and other indicators, eventually creating a system for fast open source software selection. I’ll soon share some charts and reports comparing open source CMS and other open source applications walking through the system’s highlights, stay tuned!
OSOR news reported about the second ODF Plugfest, the event held in Orvieto at the beginning of this month bringing together standards experts from major multi-national corporations, representatives of European public administrations, andmany individuals active in the European open source  community.

The second ODF Interoperability Workshop held in Orvieto gathered together more than 30 ODF experts, developers and stakeholders from public administrations to improve ODF interoperability. People from all over the world for two days collaborated to ensure not “merely” standards’ compliance but true interoperability, below an essay of facts and figures of the event.
Orvieto last week hosted the second ODF Interoperability Workshop, an international event bringing together ODF implementers from all over the world.
