The second issue of the International Free and Open Source Software Law Review – a collaborative legal publication aimed at increasing knowledge and understanding among lawyers about open source – has just been released.
Larry Ellison tomorrow will eventually unveil Oracle + Sun strategy, while waiting I took the chance to ping my friend Carlo Piana and ask also his opinion on the European Commission’s clearance of the Oracle/Sun merger.
I wonder why all the debate has been on MySQL and not even a word was spent on Java open-ness and its specs being governed by the JCP which is not really an independent foundation like Mozilla, but has Sun/Oracle in advantage on all other parties – to me that is a much more valuable common asset to protect than MySQL – let’s see what will be announced…
Actually O’ Reilly Community along with Java World and InternetNews were the first to question, others like James Governor keep spending some words on this subject. As a matter of fact the EU didn’t raise any issue about Java, though.

Stefano Fornari, CTO and co-founder of Funambol, wrote a book explaining step-by-step how to install and get started with Funambol (have a look at the Funambol mail sample chapter to get an idea). Either if you are a geek or simply interested in mobile technology, this book provides you with all necessary information about Funambol architecture, how to provide push e-mail and synchronization services or even how to develop extensions on your own.
Despite both the author and the reviewer, Alberto Falossi, are Italians, the book is written in English.
Now that the European Commission has approved the Oracle/Sun merger, while waiting Larry Ellison’s webcast about Oracle + Sun strategy update, I asked again Florian Mueller to share his opinion on Commission’s clearance of the deal.

Why should PostgreSQL be a threat to Oracle? MySQL has never been a threat to Oracle anyway. 99% of the MySQL users are just looking for a database to store data, they don’t buy support, they don’t need any company in control of the software.
And if they don’t like PostgreSQL, they might take a look at Firebird, CouchDB or another tool. There is so much more out there, MySQL is just one of many.
