Sonatype, the Maven company founded by his creator Jason van Zyl, recently released “Maven: The Definitive Guide“, a book available for download as a PDF and as a print book through O’Reilly.
Mark de Visser, the new appointed Sonatype’s CEO, answered few questions about the book and how it helps to grow the Maven community.
Volantis Systems few days ago announced the availability of Volantis Mobility Server Community Edition version 5.1. The new release aims at bringing the power of Web 2.0 to the mobile world, including optimizations for the iPhone.

Apparently now Volantis Mobility Server is called AMP Web Server, check it out at Antenna website.

Very astute observation the fact that while we get classified the same we obviously have very different paths to market:
“so that firms like Zenoss and GroundWork seem to use just the same model – i.e. differentiating on features their commercial and community products. On the contrary they use different open source production models, resulting in different core capabilities and configuration of activities (see “what is an open source business model†for more references on business models’ building blocks).”

glad you appreciate my analysis. I think there are many other differences between GroundWork and Zenoss paths to market, though.

Matthew Aslett few days ago answering a Tarus Balog‘s comment reopened an old issue about what defines an open source vendor. Savio Rodrigues picked up the ball and Matt Asay joined the football game.
Matthew says that “even if the lines between open source and proprietary continues to blur it – as originally stated by Brian Fitzgerald in his “The Transformation of Open Source Software” - is more important than ever for these 100% open source vendors to define who they are and what they stand for”.
I completely agree with your post. People like to call their work community driven, but I can count on my hand the number of true community driven projects that exist. Magento is a pretty good example of what something can become when community is done right, and they’re beginning to see the results of that as it rises above other commercial-pseudo-community-driven sites.

The value of the Sun brand maybe the reason behind the growth in MySQL billings, but we don’t know actually what ‘MySQL/infrastracture’ means, and drawing conclusions is a guessing game.Â
Hi Roberto. The 55% Y/Y growth listed in page 6 of [1] includes MySQL and “Software Infrastructure”, and the a large portion of the latter builds on GlassFish.
The financial situation is pushing many companies to move from closed, expensive, products to open-source based, much cheaper, products. We are benefiting from that. – eduard/o
