Notes from Red Hat Open Source Day 2011

Red Hat Italia organized its fifth open source day last week in Rome, and it was quite a success by the numbers:  700 people subscribed to the event, about 500 attendees, 6 talks in the plenary session and 12 speeches in the parallel sessions.

I have been following the whole event before running the final round-table, and I wish to share here some notes from the event.

SOS Open Source: Which Linux Server Distribution?

SOS Open Source yesterday announced the availability a guide to choose a Linux (server) distribution. The guide - at the moment available only in Italian - provides information about a number of Linux distributions, included CentOS, Debian, Mandriva, Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise and Ubuntu.

The Quintessence of Open Source

caponeThe second Innovators barcamp - a meet-up organized by the Italian innovators group to pass from talking about innovation to do it in and for public administrations - was the perfect venue to share some ideas about “Open Source & Multi-sided Markets“.

My ignite talk was around on one of the most important value of open source, if not the only one that makes open source a “different thing”: the community. Having had the opportunity to share my thoughts with over 100 attendees in a bare 5 minutes talk, I want here to talk deeper about why the community matters, focusing on its different constituents and their relative interests.
