During the first meeting of the Open Source Focus Group 2011, held in May at the ForumPA, I have been interviewed by the organizers to take stock of how Linux and Open Source are doing in the Italian public administrations. During the interview, I mentioned how SOS Open Source can eventually help organizations, both public and private, to start their open source journey.

Dana Blankenhorn’s blog post “Open Source still not the first option” says that established markets are the natural fit for open source, while new markets are usually served by proprietary solutions first.
Low-end market disruption - actually occurring when technology advances faster than customers’ needs (e.g. MySQL vs Oracle, Alfresco vs Filenet) - happens in the first stages of maturity in open source adoption, while sustaining innovation probably happens at a later stage.
Talking about Alfresco’s business strategy I happened to mention that the European open source observatory released guidelines for open source procurement.
The OSOR guideline draws on the extensive analysis conducted by the Dutch government’s OSOSS in 2005, followed by a guide published later by the successor organization to the OSOSS program (Netherlands Open in Verbinding).

The Italian association Concreta-mente for the second year will held the Open Source in Public Administrations conference, on the 1st of April 2009 in Rome, at the LUISS Guido Carli university.
Four different case studies of Italian public administrations using open source software and open standards will be presented. Carlo Mochi Sismondi, Forum PA General Manager, will moderate a round-table discussion with representatives from public and private sectors.
