A definitely more accurate information can be elaborated using the &lt;a href="https://github.com/marvil07/drupal-contribution-analyzer#readme" rel="nofollow"&gt;drupal contributor analyzer&lt;/a&gt;, and a pretty recent &lt;a href="http://growingventuresolutions.com/blog/contributors-drupal-7-final-numbers" rel="nofollow"&gt;write-up about contributors for Drupal&lt;/a&gt; is available too. The post has been updated accordingly.</description>

"While Drupal has a relatively small development team working on the core" The link goes to ohloh.net which only tracks commits to version control.  Drupal actually has a ton of people working on core, but only 2 at a time have commit rights.
