Open Source AIR Alternative: Appcelerator, an interview with Jeff Kunz

Appcelerator - the company founded in 2006 by Jeff Haynie and Nolan Wright, that took a first round in 2008 from Storm Ventures - recently released Titanium preview, an open source platform for building desktop applications using Web technologies.

At the open source think tank I met Jeff Kunz, formerly Olliance Group partner and now VP of Business Development at Appcelerator, and I asked him some background about Appcelerator and its business model.

Open Source Case Study and Open Source Governance

The OSOR Case Studies section this month covers Grosseto’s OpenPortalGuard eID system. The case study tells the story about an Italian case of excellence, started in 2003 when  the Italian government decided to introduce eID cards. Grosseto, to acquire an eID-based access control system for its ICT infrastructure, applied a rigorous open source strategy, aiming to cut implementation and operational costs.

Free Open Source License Insight Conference, 16 April 2009, Seoul

On the 16th of April the Korea Software Copyright Committee (SOCOP) - a non-profit organization under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism having the mandate to promote the protection of software-related intellectual property rights - will host the Free Open Source License Insight Conference, at the COEX Intercontinental Hotel (Seoul).

The conference will start with invited talks by experts from abroad and South Korea, a panel discussion will follow. Being and invited speaker I want to thank Ms. Cho Jung-Hyun from SOCOP for her kind invitation, I am really sorry I can’t go.

Italian Open Source Offering: LUISS Launches On Line Survey

CeRSI, the Research Center in Information Systems of the Luiss University, launched a survey on how Italian IT firms  profit from open source.

The survey - divided in 15 sections, requiring about 15-20 minutes per section - is part of the SFIDA-PMI research, aiming at understanding how IT firms deliver IT services.

All findings will be available to participants after data analysis will be complete.

European Software Patents: the War is Over

The Software Patents war is finally over, glad open source cluster technology made it possible.

Brussels & Munich, 1st April 2009 — After years of confidential work, the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII) today announce a radical way to improve software patent quality: Binaries-As-Prior-Art, or BAPA. BAPA combines a database of billions of compiled computer programs (”binaries”) with a powerful Cloud search engine that can find any invention in microseconds.
