Open Source Monitoring: GroundWork on Sale? Not Really

GroundWork, the provider of the open source based network management software, today announced the availability of GroundWork Monitor Starter Edition, designed for small deployments up to 250 monitored devices.

David Dennis, senior director of product marketing at Groundwork, in March told me that GroundWork  “productized” a cheaper ‘stealth’ product that was sold by their partners only, prior to this launch. The Starter Edition has now gained an official state, apparently answering to community edition users’ needs.

Is open source on sale? is Groundwork trying to upsell its community?

Playing around with WordPress

Trying to organize my blog information in a clearer way, over the next two weeks I will make some cosmetics changes to commercial open source blog. Yesterday I started by updating WordPress to the latest version available, and adding a plug-in to keep my readers up to date about my events (Event Calendar by Alex Tingle).

The WordPress publish platform is getting more and more flexible everyday, its plugin architecture helps developers to release a great number of add-ons, making WordPress a viable option for many purposes, from a stock icons e-commerce store to an apartment booking website.

OpenOffice.org Opens up for Business - Andrew Ziem - author, trainer, tester, and OpenOffice.org blogger - wrote a OpenOffice.org quick-start guide for beginners containing also tips about recommended extensions.

IBM, Sun and OpenOffice.org - Oddly enough the article still talks about IBM’s hypothetical acquisition of Sun, but all points about why a foundation is needed make still sense.

Big Brother Awards 2009

The Big Brother Award - a prize awarded to private companies and individuals who have “excelled” in the violation of our privacy - has got at its eleventh edition this year. Last year it was held in 9 different countries, while the 2009 edition seems to take place only in 5 countries, Italy included (thanks to the Winston Smith Project).

Open Source Business Strategy: Feedback on the Beekeeper Model Revisited
